Program Overview

Dream.Org’s Justice program organizes directly impacted people to advance policy change at the state and federal level and sits in the Dream.Org Advocacy Department.

Dream.Org’s Justice program has a unique approach to building and winning criminal justice campaigns. We organize with directly impacted leaders and invite their participation in our rigorous advocacy training program. We then partner with a subset of those leaders to run state legislative campaigns. In 2023 we ran campaigns in nine states and successfully passed legislation in five. Similarly, we always include directly impacted leaders in our federal legislative efforts. We are a close-knit group led by people from across the country.

Purpose

Dream.Org seeks an experienced Director to lead our national Justice team. This person will report to the Vice President for Advocacy, and be responsible for formulating and executing state and federal criminal justice campaigns. The Director will supervise a 3-5 person team that includes campaign, legislative, and policy positions.

Candidates should have extensive experience in the criminal justice reform space, including a track record of running successful, dynamic campaigns. Candidates should also share Dream.Org’s commitment to centering directly impacted local leaders in our campaigns and putting together common ground coalitions that can in both progressive and conservative jurisdictions.

In addition to leading the Justice team, the Director will also represent Dream.Org’s Justice in external settings, including national coalitions, conferences, media, and development.

Duties and Responsibilities

State Campaigns & Federal Campaigns (60%)

  • Lead process to select a set of legislative priority states each year
  • Ensure that strong state leads are chosen for each state and paired with an adequate level of national staff resources
  • Keep close track of legislative processes in all priority states so that campaigns meet their goals, with the ultimate goal of passing legislation in as many states as possible
  • Lead process to select federal legislative and administrative priorities
  • Work with Government Affairs Director on strategies to advance the federal agenda
  • Build and maintain relationships with peers in the national criminal justice field

Leadership, Management, and Development (40%)

  • Oversee Justice team, including direct management of Justice team staff, program budget, and relevant vendors
  • Serve on the Advocacy Department leadership team, as well as the organization-wide leadership team
  • Lead team in Annual Planning and hold long term strategic planning responsibility for state and federal justice campaign work
  • Work closely with the Development team on fundraising
  • Model organizational core values of solutions, servant leadership, and soul

Qualifications

  • 5-7 years leading criminal justice campaigns
  • Experience managing advocacy programs, including supervision experience
  • Experience working in conservative jurisdictions is a plus
  • A history of building common ground coalitions
  • Strong public presentation skills
  • Strong internal organizational skills to manage 10 concurrent campaigns
  • Proficient in data management and project management systems like Salesforce and Asana
  • Demonstrated strong work ethic and capacity to work diligently and efficiently in a rapidly evolving organization

This full-time salaried position will work fully remotely.

Travel

Must be willing and able to travel 1-2 times per month, including to priority legislative states, Washington, D.C, as well as internal convening and conferences.

After a 6 month waiting period, employees can contribute to our retirement plan. Currently, Dream.Org offers up to a 5% match. We also offer a flexible spending, pre-tax program for medical expenses, dependent care expenses, transit expenses and parking expenses. All full-time Dream.Org employees accrue 4 weeks of vacation time off and 12 days of sick time off over the first year of employment. Part-time employees accrue time off on a prorated basis. In addition to 10 paid holidays, Dream.Org also provides paid time off from December 24th through January 1st each year.
