Program Description:

The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) is a program within the Aspen Institute. The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) is a global network of organizations that propel entrepreneurship in emerging markets. ANDE members provide critical financial, educational, and business support services to small and growing businesses (SGBs) based on the conviction and evidence that SGBs will create jobs, stimulate long-term economic growth, and produce environmental and social benefits. Ultimately, we believe that SGBs can help lift countries out of poverty. Launched with 34 members in 2009, ANDE now comprises nearly 250 members who collectively operate in more than 150 countries.

ANDE is looking for a Director of Finance, based in our Washington, DC office. This is a full-time, exempt position.

Basic Function:

The Director of Finance will report to ANDE’s Executive Director and is responsible for providing financial leadership across eight international offices and four US based departments as well as overseeing the work of ANDE’s IT team. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience managing and overseeing compliance on donor funded projects to include USAID, foreign governments, and private foundations in an international non-profit setting. The Director will serve as a strategic thought partner to executive leadership and advise Program Directors in formulating strategic budgets that strengthen programmatic operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee a global team of seven Finance, grants management and IT professionals based in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the U.S. Â Â
  • Oversee annual budget preparation and prepare quarterly consolidated financial reporting and forecasting for ANDE U.S. and eight international locations.
  • Prepare executive level financial performance reports for ANDE senior leadership and advisory board. Â
  • Direct all financial planning to include the buildout and maintenance of excel based financial modeling tools for international office, and reporting modules for US based financial reporting tool (Planful).
  • Oversee all proposal costing, ensuring sufficient recovering of ANDE’s administration costs as well as all compliance with donor requirements.
  • Closely monitor ANDE unrestricted ending balances, cash flow needs and appropriate spend down of grant funding.
  • Oversee post award grants administration and subrecipient monitoring, including for multiple re-granting facilities.
  • Set department strategies and procedures, focused on continuous improvement.
  • Oversee the operations of program-wide information systems platforms. Set strategic objectives for ANDE’s technology needs and oversee execution of large-scale technology projects.
  • Serve on ANDE’s Executive leadership team advising on financial planning, budgeting, IT and compliance matters.

Knowledge, Education, and Experience:

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in accounting and 10+ years of experience in Accounting, Finance, and Budgeting. Graduate level degree in Finance a plus.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in a managerial role.
  • Prior experience managing funding from development finance institutions, USAID and other government funding, including all financial compliance requirements in a fast paced, complicated global multi-office setting, within a non-profit (preferred) or private sector organization.
  • Experience in grants accounting.
  • Strong budgeting and forecasting background.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience using financial reporting tools such as Adaptive, Planful, or in-house budgeting tools.
  • Experience in analyzing and interpreting data and communicating results to non-finance personnel.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, complex international environment and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and planning skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills, as well as sound judgment, maturity and flexibility and ability to handle stress.
  • Experience working with multi-currency international programs.
  • Additional language skills and/or multicultural/international work experience a plus.
