WHAT YOU’LL DO

All Development team roles are responsible for cultivating, stewarding, and managing a portfolio of donors in our local communities who share our commitment to ensuring that all children have access to an equitable and excellent education. As a member of the Field Fundraising team, you will be part of a team-based effort charged with developing and executing a long-term vision and strategy to achieve our development goals for both public and private funding.

In addition to being a senior individual contributor, the Managing Director, Grants is a people manager and team leader responsible for setting up, leading, and continuously improving how the grants function operates across the Field Fundraising cohort. This role owns the operating model for grant development, establishes clear norms, workflows, and accountability, and ensures the grants team is positioned to deliver high-quality work in service of regional and enterprise revenue goals.

Reporting to the Vice President of Field Fundraising, the Managing Director, Grants manages and coaches grants staff, builds collaborative relationships with Executive Directors and regional development teams, and ensures strong coordination with central teams. This role is charged with raising $2–7 million or more from a portfolio of major corporate, foundation, and public funders while also strengthening the overall effectiveness, consistency, and sustainability of the grants function.

WHAT YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR

  • 10% - Set vision, strategy, and plan for developing a shared grant writing service for the Field Fundraising cohort, incorporating input from Executive Directors and Development staff, with the goal of maximizing revenue to the organization as a whole

  • 65% - Manage and write a set number of proposals, reports, letters of intent, and other grant-related deliverables for multiple regional development teams. This includes:

    • Manage and execute the grant cycle processes (strategy, drafting, finalizing, and submission) for a portfolio of funders.

    • Liaise and coordinate with national central teams (finance, data, public partnerships, etc.) and regional teams (Executive Directors, Development, Program, etc.) as needed.

    • Occasionally support non-portfolio grants or multi-region grants.

  • 15% - Provide strategy, consultation and technical assistance for the full Field Fundraising cohort. In partnership with others on the Development team, build standard language, templates, and resources for all cohort fundraisers.

  • 5% - Consistently maintain donor, prospect, and fundraising activity information in our customer relationship management system (currently SalesForce) and leverage this information in tracking progress, monitoring gaps, and adjusting strategy and approach

  • 5% - Steward team and organizational initiatives


YOUR EXPERIENCE

Your areas of knowledge and expertise that matter most for this role (minimum qualifications):

  • Relationship Building and Management

    • Highly skilled relationship builder, with both internal and external partners

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Fundraising and Development

    • Specialize in best practices of development and grant fundraising

    • Proven track record of successfully navigating complex philanthropic landscapes to reach revenue goals

    • Experience managing a diverse portfolio of donors/funders from the public and private sector

    • Leverage historical local development trends in order to set strategy and/or adjust course as necessary

  • Grants Management

    • Set vision and direction for building a shared grant writing service to support a portfolio of local development teams in service of maximizing revenue to Teach For America as an enterprise

    • Ability to manage and execute multiple deadlines at the same time

    • Monitor progress against the portfolio to ensure goals are met

Prior experience

  • Required: At least 7+ years of related experience in development and grant writing

  • Required: Track record of meeting and exceeding ambitious goals as a fundraiser and grant writer

  • Preferred: Teach For America development experience

Work Demands

  • Occasional weekend or evening work hours required.

  • Must be able to travel to engage with local donors

We aim to source investments that fuel our work and impact with a revenue growth trajectory to raise $300 million annually. This role will be an essential part of the Field Fundraising arm of the Revenue and Development team, maximizing the contributions of local donors across multiple regions of the country.

YOUR COMPENSATION

The applicable salary range for each U.S.-based role is based on where the employee works and is aligned to one of 3 tiers according to a cost of labor index in that geographic area. Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of job-related factors, which may include education, training, experience, location, business needs, or market demands. New hires are typically brought into the organization at a salary between the range minimum and the salary range midpoint depending on qualifications, internal equity, and the budgeted amount for the role. The expected salary ranges for this role are set forth below. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Tier A: $90,000 - $122,800

Tier B: $98,000 - $133,800

Tier C: $106,100 - $144,800
