ROLE TITLE: Managing Director, Communications & Public Affairs (Content)

WHAT YOU’LL DO
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience writing crisp, clear and compelling messages; expertise in education communications; and experience writing speeches, opinion pieces and social media content in the voice of executives. You will work closely with your manager, the SMD for Communications & Public Affairs (Enterprise Messaging & Thought Leadership) and the rest of Teach For America’s Communications & Public Affairs team, as well as External Affairs colleagues across the organization. You will create messages that proactively position TFA to tell its story of impact in communities across the country, to advocate for educational excellence for all children, and to respond to relevant news of the day and emerging public affairs challenges. You will create heavy outlines, complete drafts and templates for executive speeches, thought pieces, and social media, and will be skilled at writing in different voices and perspectives.
You contribute to an agile, collaborative and efficient team of external affairs experts, as well as organizational wide communications and public affairs practices and knowledge building. You demonstrate a commitment to expanding excellent educational opportunities for all children, and Teach For America’s core values.
WHAT YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR
Write thought leadership content that reinforces TFA’s expertise and mission.
Develop timely and topical statements and message guidance that drives TFA’s proactive narrative, and that responds to emerging research, breaking news, and public affairs issues that TFA will elevate its public voice on, providing a foundation for all organizational communications.
Create executive briefs, talking points, speeches, perspective pieces, social media content and other materials that will help TFA effectively communicate with media, partners, participants, donors, and other key audiences.
A WEEK IN THE LIFE
Over the course of any week, the MD, Communications & Public Affairs (content) will spend time:
Writing and updating content for TFA’s evergreen message guidance;
Writing topic and/or event specific message guidance;
Writing talking points and speeches for TFA’s CEO, President and other executive thought leaders;
Writing a thoughtful perspective piece with a compelling call to action in the voice of an organizational executive or member of TFA’s network;
Directing and creating content for executive social media;
Creating an op-ed outline for use in media markets across the country to elevate TFA network voices through earned media campaigns;
Reading the education related latest research and media coverage to inform unique and relevant messages and perspectives in your work.
YOUR EXPERIENCE
Your areas of knowledge and expertise that matter most for this role (minimum qualifications):
At least 7 years of experience writing organizational messaging and executive external communications;
Ability to write in others people’s voices and perspectives for both oral and written delivery;
Expertise working in fast paced high pressure environments to produce thoughtful, detail oriented messages;
Some weekend and evening work required;
Ability to travel to in-person meetings in various U.S. cities occasionally.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The applicable salary range for each U.S.-based role is based on where the employee works and is aligned to one of 3 tiers according to a cost of labor index in that geographic area. Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of job-related factors, which may include education, training, experience, location, business needs, or market demands. New hires are typically brought into the organization at a salary between the range minimum and the salary range midpoint depending on qualifications, internal equity, and the budgeted amount for the role. The expected salary range for this role are set forth below. These ranges may be modified in the future.
Tier A: $95,200-$122,800
Tier B: $103,800-$133,800
Tier C: $112,400-$144,800
