WHAT YOU'LL DO:
The Director, Alumni Strategy and Engagement will be responsible for designing and implementing a comprehensive leadership development strategy aimed at engaging Southern California Teach For America (TFA) alumni and propelling alums into high-impact roles within schools, school systems, and other key sectors. This role will focus on driving alumni talent into leadership positions, particularly in Southern California, with a special emphasis on advancing opportunities for alumni of color. By cultivating a robust alumni network, fostering strategic partnerships, and leveraging data-driven insights, the Director, Alumni Strategy and Engagement will ensure the successful engagement and activation of alumni. Additionally, this role involves supporting regional talent-matching events, optimizing data systems, and contributing to broader regional team initiatives.
WHAT YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:
Alumni Strategic Planning and Execution (15%)
Help set annual goals around the size and strength of our local alumni programming and leadership pipeline through a comprehensive analysis of our educational landscape and the impact and scale of alumni leadership initiatives.
Develop strategy to engage alumni in various key industries and roles that will foster alumni leadership development, and career growth
Alumni Leadership and Talent Development (30%)
Design and execute programming and resources to drive alumni talent into high impact roles. This includes developing a strong understanding of the path to local opportunities and designing and implementing a strategy to “build a bench” of alumni to step into those opportunities with a particular focus on building further opportunities for alumni of color to lead in Los Angeles by leveraging regional and national structures (i.e. The Collective Los Angeles, The School Leaders of Color Conference).
Support with the execution of regional talent-matching event, Lead SoCal- a comprehensive program aimed at recruiting and placing TFA alumni into leadership roles within Southern California, targeting School System Leaders (SSL), School Leaders (SL), and Mid-level Leaders (MLL). Support the development of a strong candidate pipeline, foster strategic relationships with SoCal partner schools and networks, and drive alumni engagement and leadership development.
Build Alumni Network and Strengthen Connectivity (30%)
Cultivate a strong and engaged alumni network by organizing and managing alumni-facing events, both in-person and virtual, to enhance connectivity and community, and relaunching Los Angeles’ Collective Chapter.
Strengthen alumni connectivity by building strategic relationships with alumni in education and outside of it (prioritizing School System Leaders, School Leaders, and Mid-level Leaders) via in-person and virtual meetings that are aligned to and further our alumni priorities and lead to sustained activation.
Support the development of, maintain, and optimize the system for data quality in SoCal in Salesforce to analyze and retain historical information about our alumni, leverage data to understand quality of our programming, and to gain insights into the motivations of our base and influence strategic planning
Partnerships and Outreach (15%):
Forge strategic partnerships with organizations, schools, networks, and educational leadership programs to create opportunities for alumni involvement and career advancement.
Represent TFA Los Angeles at relevant events and forums to build relationships and increase visibility for the alumni network.
Regional Team Responsibilities (10%)
Operate as an unwavering team player, attending all-staff meetings and supporting the execution of region-wide projects for the benefit of the collective team as a steward of key performance indicators
Participate in-region and organization-wide initiatives and events such as corps member selection, National staff calls, and working groups
YOUR EXPERIENCE:
The Must Haves
Managing multiple complex, high-profile projects
Managing, organizing, or coordination of project team members
Minimum of 5 years work experience required; 7 years preferred
Experience working at a school required
Collaboration across teams/groups
Launching and sustaining initiatives
Regularly engaging in self-reflection and/or facilitated learning experiences related to concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion
Creating strong written products and verbal presentations
Teach For America Alumni experience preferred
Skills
Exceptional oral and written communication skills
Excellent organizational and management skills
Proven ability to build authentic relationships across lines of social and personal difference; leverage relationships toward achievement of concrete goals
Create and follow a decision-making process that brings the perspectives of those who would be most impacted by a decision to the forefront
Continuously enhance their understanding of the history and current manifestations (policies, practices) of systemic inequalities in and outside of education.
Identify inequities in the day to day of their work, analyze them with empathy and take actions to drive positive changes within their sphere of control or influence.
Familiarity with suite of Microsoft tools including PowerPoint, Excel and Word
Experience using Salesforce, CanvaPro, Google suite, or similar platforms to source, create, and design content preferred.
Work Demands:
Occasional weekend and evening work required for events within the Greater Los Angeles area
This role is required to travel to and work from our Downtown Los Angeles office at least 1 day per week, or as needed (in-person days vary based on constituent needs, but Tuesdays will always be required for team meetings)
THE TEAM:
The Teach For America Los Angeles Alumni Strategy and Engagement team is charged with fostering a network of systems-change leaders dedicated to educational equity in Los Angeles. The team, rooted in TFA’s Theory of Leadership and the Los Angeles context, is a major contributor to our regional outcomes and our organization-wide goals. The Alumni Strategy and Engagement team sits on The Development and External Affairs Team, which ensures TFA LA has the institutional support from external constituents to maintain, strengthen, and grow our activities in alignment with our strategic vision, this year and in years to come. Our work is critical to our regional team’s ability to reach our breakthroughs and goals by ensuring we have vital financial resources and critical partnerships to facilitate our core program, as well as the support of individuals, corporations, school and district leaders, policy makers, TFA alumni, civic and philanthropic entities. YOUR COMPENSATION
The applicable salary range for each U.S.-based role is based on where the employee works and is aligned to one of 3 tiers according to a cost of labor index in that geographic area. Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of job-related factors, which may include education, training, experience, location, business needs, or market demands.New hires are typically brought into the organization at a salary between the range minimum and the salary range midpoint depending on qualifications, internal equity, and the budgeted amount for the role. The expected salary ranges for this role are set forth below. These ranges may be modified in the future.
$87,700-$117,000
