ROLE TITLE: Managing Director, Communications

WHAT YOU’LL DO

In this pivotal role, you will serve as the communication linchpin for program participants and relevant Teach For America (TFA) staff, including corps members, alumni, and network members. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure that all stakeholders are well-informed about programs spearheaded by the Corps Member and Alumni Leadership Development (CMALD) team. You will design and execute a comprehensive communications plan that not only enhances the participant experience but also aligns with the overarching goals of the organization.

As the team’s primary communicator, you will create and distribute engaging promotional materials, share impactful stories, and highlight valuable opportunities across various media channels. Your efforts will contribute significantly to building enterprise awareness of Corps Member and alumni programming. You’ll narrate the story of our work throughout the year, fostering a deeper organizational understanding of our programmatic impact.

Your expertise in diverse forms of effective communication—ranging from digital platforms to visual storytelling—will enable you to craft presentations that resonate with and captivate your audience. With a keen eye for detail and a strong writing ability, you’ll approach communication from multiple perspectives, carefully considering the equity implications of your choices. You understand the profound effect that strong communication has on the participant experience for Corps members and alumni, and you are committed to shaping an enterprise-wide understanding of the efficacy of our programs at this crucial juncture.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Strategic Communication Development (20%): Design, refine, and implement a robust communications strategy that delivers timely, relevant, and on-brand information tailored for Corps member programs, beginning with Pre-Service and continuing through the in-service experience

  • Alumni Program Communications (20%): Lead the execution of the communications strategy for alumni programs, collaborating closely with program managers to ensure content is engaging and adaptive to evolving needs

  • Multimedia Content Creation (30%): Develop and iterate various communication structures—including videos, documents, social media posts, and emails—utilizing a range of tools and tapping into both internal and external expertise to effectively engage your target audiences (Corps members, alumni, and staff)

  • Enterprise Communication Support (20%): Implement and refine existing structures for enterprise communications, providing direct support to the Executive Vice President as needed, ensuring that messaging remains clear and consistent

  • Data Analysis and Strategic Recommendations (10%): Analyze communications-related data across the participant ecosystem, offering strategic insights to optimize channels, timing, vehicles, and messaging as necessary.

YOUR EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 7 years of relevant professional experience: Background in the field which demonstrates an understanding of industry standards and best practices.

  • Proven ability to craft and execute a comprehensive communication vision: Skilled in developing tailored communication strategies that resonate with diverse audiences, ensuring clarity and engagement across multiple platforms.

  • Exceptional organizational and project management skills: Highly proficient in managing multiple projects simultaneously, coordinating resources effectively, and meeting deadlines without compromising quality.

  • Demonstrated expertise in communications strategy and best practices: In-depth knowledge of communication frameworks, enabling the design and implementation of innovative strategies that enhance brand messaging and stakeholder engagement.

  • Ability to communicate effectively through a variety of visual tools: Proficient in creating compelling presentations and visual content using platforms such as PowerPoint and Canva, enhancing message retention and audience engagement.

  • Fluency with a range of digital engagement tools: Experienced in utilizing platforms like Salesforce Marketing Cloud for targeted marketing campaigns, audience segmentation, and analytics to drive engagement and optimize outreach efforts.

  • Video editing skills are a valuable asset: Capable of producing and editing video content, enhancing multimedia communication efforts and providing a dynamic approach to storytelling and audience interaction.

  • Commitment to Equity: A strong commitment to racial equity, with a history of contributing to initiatives that promote inclusion and diversity.

The Teach For America Corps Member and Alumni Leadership Development team is dedicated to fostering systems-change leadership to achieve educational equity. Our mission is to equip participants with the resources and experiences necessary for impactful community engagement and leadership. The Program Infrastructure team plays a critical role in establishing and maintaining the frameworks that support our operational success, ensuring that all participants feel connected and empowered.

Increasing the collective impact of the Corps Member and Alumni Leadership Development team requires an intentional commitment to maintaining systems and processes necessary to ensure a cohesive and consistent staff experience as well as excellent operations and strategic communications. The Program Infrastructure team builds and maintains operational systems, establishes processes and policies that undergird the program model and drives programmatic learning. Collectively, our work is the backbone of CMALD, supporting our staff members and enhancing the experience of our program participants.

YOUR COMPENSATION

The applicable salary range for each U.S.-based role is based on where the employee works and is aligned to one of 3 tiers according to a cost of labor index in that geographic area. Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of job-related factors, which may include education, training, experience, location, business needs, or market demands. New hires are typically brought into the organization at a salary between the range minimum and the salary range midpoint depending on qualifications, internal equity, and the budgeted amount for the role. The expected salary ranges for this role are set forth below. These ranges may be modified in the future.

  • Tier A: $81,700 - $109,300

  • Tier B: $89,100 - $119,100

  • Tier C: $96,400 - $129,00
