THE ROLE

The Director, Alumni Strategy Planning and Engagement will be responsible for designing and implementing a comprehensive leadership development strategy aimed at propelling Teach For America (TFA) alumni into high-impact roles within schools, school systems, and other key sectors. This role will focus on driving alumni talent into leadership positions, particularly in Southern California, with a special emphasis on advancing opportunities for alumni of color. By cultivating a robust alumni network, fostering strategic partnerships, and leveraging data-driven insights, the Lead will ensure the successful engagement and activation of alumni. Additionally, this role involves managing regional talent-matching events, optimizing data systems, and contributing to broader regional team initiatives.

THE PERSON

Alumni Strategic Planning and Execution (20%)

  • Design and execute a leadership development strategy to drive our network into school-, school-systems-based leadership, and other high impact roles, including key leadership pipelines and other professional development opportunities for our alumni, either directly or through key partnerships. This may include strategies focused on recent alumni, 2CMs and other priority groups.

  • Develop annual goals around the size and strength of our local alumni programming leadership pipeline through a comprehensive analysis of our educational landscape and the impact and scale of alumni leadership initiatives.

Alumni Leadership and Talent Development (30%)

  • Design and execute programming and resources to drive alumni talent into high impact roles. This includes developing a strong understanding of the path to local opportunities and designing and implementing a strategy to “build a bench” of alumni to step into those opportunities with a particular focus on building further opportunities for alumni of color to lead in Los Angeles by leveraging regional and national structures (i.e. The Collective Los Angeles, The School Leaders of Color Conference).

  • Develop, manage, and lead the execution of regional talent-matching event, Lead SoCal. Manage a comprehensive program aimed at recruiting and placing TFA alumni into leadership roles within Southern California, including targeting School System Leaders (SSL), School Leaders (SL), and Mid-level Leaders (MLL). Oversee the development of a strong candidate pipeline, foster strategic relationships with SoCal partner schools and networks, and drive alumni engagement and leadership development.

Build Alumni Network and Strengthen Connectivity (30%)

  • Cultivate a strong and engaged alumni network by organizing and managing alumni-facing events, both in-person and virtual, to enhance connectivity and community.

  • Strengthen alumni connectivity by building strategic relationships with alumni in education (prioritizing School System Leaders, School Leaders, and Mid-level Leaders) via in-person and virtual meetings that are aligned to and further our alumni priorities and lead to sustained activation.

  • Develop, maintain, and optimize the system for data quality in SoCal in Salesforce to analyze and retain historical information about our alumni, leverage data to understand quality of our programming, and to gain insights into the motivations of our base and influence strategic planning

Partnerships and Outreach (10%):

  • Forge strategic partnerships with organizations, schools, networks, and educational leadership programs to create opportunities for alumni involvement and career advancement.

  • Represent TFA Los Angeles at relevant events and forums to build relationships and increase visibility for the alumni network.

Regional Team Responsibilities (10%)

  • Operate as an unwavering team player, attending all-staff meetings and supporting the execution of region-wide projects for the benefit of the collective team as a steward of key performance indicators

  • Participate in-region and organization-wide initiatives and events such as corps member selection, National staff calls, and working groups

THE MUST HAVES

Prior Experience

  • Managing multiple complex, high-profile projects

  • Managing, organizing, or coordination of project team members

  • Minimum of 5 years work experience required; 7 years preferred

  • Collaboration across teams/groups

  • Launching and sustaining initiatives

  • Regularly engaging in self-reflection and/or facilitated learning experiences related to concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion

  • Creating strong written products and verbal presentations

  • School-based leadership experience preferred

  • Teach For America Alumni experience preferred

Skills

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills

  • Excellent organizational and management skills

  • Proven ability to build authentic relationships across lines of social and personal difference; leverage relationships toward achievement of concrete goals

  • Create and follow a decision-making process that brings the perspectives of those who would be most impacted by a decision to the forefront

  • Continuously enhance their understanding of the history and current manifestations (policies, practices) of systemic inequalities in and outside of education.

  • Identify inequities in the day to day of their work, analyze them with empathy and take actions to drive positive changes within their sphere of control or influence.

  • Familiarity with suite of Microsoft tools including PowerPoint, Excel and Word

  • Experience using Salesforce, CanvaPro, Google suit, or similar platforms to source, create, and design content preferred.

Work Demands

  • Occasional weekend and evening work required for events within the Greater Los Angeles area

  • This role is required to travel to and work from our Downtown Los Angeles office at least 1 day per week, or as needed (in-person days vary based on constituent needs, but Tuesdays will always be required for team meetings)

YOUR COMPENSATION

The applicable salary range for each U.S.-based role is based on where the employee works and is aligned to one of 3 tiers according to a cost of labor index in that geographic area. Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of job-related factors, which may include education, training, experience, location, business needs, or market demands. The expected starting salary ranges for this role are set forth below. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Tier B: $81,000 - $108,300

Tier C: $87,700 - $117,200
