WHAT YOU’LL DO
Teach for America Florida is looking for an experienced leader who is passionate about ensuring that all students in Florida have access to an excellent education. The Managing Director, Public & Government Relations will represent the organization externally to strengthen key government and community, develop statewide strategies to drive political engagement, and build, manage, and execute, including directing a manager-level national team member, a comprehensive marketing and communications plan to further the organization’s brand.
The ideal candidate will be passionate about the job, able to form authentic connections quickly, deftly navigate Florida’s political landscape, and expertly share TFA Florida’s story across multiple settings and platforms. You are an organized, natural self-starter with a strong orientation to strengthening and building partnerships, understanding details and nuance, and communicating efficiently and effectively. You bring a sophisticated political acumen and emotional intelligence and leverage those skills within and outside the organization to ensure TFA Florida Regions meet the demands of a complex and dynamic landscape and broadly share our narrative.
The goal of this role is to positively and productively represent TFA Florida in a wide range of strategic partnership settings, drive government relations to increase support for the organization, and strengthen our storytelling through a comprehensive marketing and communications plan that includes traditional and digital media.
WHAT YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR
Public Relations (20%)
Represent Teach For America Florida at local and statewide meetings and events
Serve on mission-aligned and strategic task forces, councils, boards, etc
Strengthen the organizational brand by proactively leveraging media platforms, partnerships, and voices, including student, family, and educator voices, to share our learnings
Government Relations (50%)
Develop statewide priorities and strategies, collaborate with others, and advocate for our child-centered policy agenda
Represent and advocate for the organization with elected officials at the state and local levels
Drive political engagement strategy, including with the Governor’s office, state legislature, local elected officials, school board members, etc.
Storytelling (20%)
Develop a comprehensive marketing and communications plan, including traditional and digital media, to strengthen our brand, presence, and thought leadership through storytelling
Lead national support manager-level team member to execute social media strategy and develop branded materials
Build and strengthen relationships with local media outlets and proactively pitch compelling stories that underscore TFA’s strengths and values
Serve as the region’s communications expert, including supporting the executive director and managing potential crisis communications
Agile Teamwork (10%)
Operate with flexibility to support the team as needed and complete other duties as assigned
Willingness to travel to the region's three geographic locations and Tallahassee multiple times a year
A WEEK IN THE LIFE
Over the course of any week, the Managing Director, Public & Government Relations will spend time:
Engaging with local, state, and federal elected officials to build and strengthen relationships and further our child-centered policy agenda
Attending events, meetings, and conferences on behalf of the organization
Sourcing, crafting, and pitching proactive stories and content to enhance TFA Florida’s brand narrative
Leading a national team member to execute a robust social media plan and develop key branded collateral to support our work
Working alongside senior leadership to prepare for high-stakes internal and external communications opportunities, both written and verbal
YOUR EXPERIENCE
Your areas of knowledge and expertise that matter most for this role (minimum qualifications):
At least six years of experience in public affairs, marketing, communications, media relations, and/or government relations
Significant experience setting direction and managing others to reach ambitious goals
Ability to develop and cultivate relationships with diverse external collaborators and support them in contributing to a shared goal
Outstanding interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence
Able to speak to and model our core values and commitment to racial equity and belonging
Track record of getting results while leading multiple large-scale projects simultaneously
BONUS (preferred qualifications)
Strong existing knowledge of Teach For America’s current strategic direction and the education and political landscape in Florida
Teach For America corps member and/or staff experience
History of engagement and involvement with Teach For America programs, events, and opportunities
Prior experience working in politics including but not limited to political campaign roles, legislative aiding, serving as an elected official’s press secretary/communications officer

The Florida landscape is broad and diverse - our team operates with agility and nuance as we execute work across the state in our three geographies: Central Florida, Jacksonville, and Miami-Dade. The Programs and Impact team works closely with the Operations and Capabilities team and central Teach For America teams, including the Recruitment and Ignite teams and other regions.
YOUR COMPENSATION
The applicable salary range for each U.S.-based role is based on where the employee works and is aligned to one of 3 tiers according to a cost of labor index in that geographic area. Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of job-related factors, which may include education, training, experience, location, business needs, or market demands. The expected salary ranges for this role are set forth below. These ranges may be modified in the future.
Tier 1 - $81,700 - $122,500
