ROLE TITLE: Manager, External Affairs

WHAT YOU’LL DO

As a member of Teach For America’s External Affairs team, you will partner closely with and support a small portfolio of regional teams to execute local external affairs plans. You will build close partnerships with local colleagues to ensure you are proximate to the work happening in the communities you support, and you will engage in regular team of teams meetings with national and local external affairs colleagues to increase integration and alignment of the external affairs work happening across the organization. The external affairs work that you execute will increase the external profile and relevance of TFA; rally support for this work; inspire more applications to the corps and Ignite; highlight and support the impact of alum education leaders; increase awareness around what is working to improve student learning and classroom conditions for social, emotional, and academic development; and mitigate external affairs risks.

You are a collaborative team member and you contribute to an agile and efficient team of external affairs experts, as well as organizational wide external affairs practices and knowledge building. You demonstrate a commitment to education, diversity, equity, and inclusiveness.

WHAT YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR

  • Serve as the point of contact for External Affairs needs for cohort of regional teams. (70%) This may include:

    • Provide design support and produce collateral (presentation decks, email headers, event signage, one pagers, social media content etc);

    • Develop local messaging based on national message guidance, draft speeches and op-eds;

    • Support and deploy mass emails utilizing Salesforce Marketing Cloud;

    • Draft and publish content on regional blogs;

    • Research local members of the media and partner with the Communications and Public Affairs team to support local staff in media relationship building and pitching;

    • Elevate local stories for national amplification (tfa.org, earned media, national social channels) by ensuring regional colleagues are aware of storytelling priorities and soliciting ideas and sources for local stories;

    • Update local tfa.org microsites;

    • Video and photo sourcing, editing & shoot planning;

    • Support reviewing estimates/proposals for external consultants.

  • Create and update central external affairs resources including external message guidance and planning templates. (30%)

A WEEK IN THE LIFE

Over the course of any week, the Manager, External Affairs will spend time:

  • Partnering with regional teams on determining, planning, and executing external affairs plans for owned media channels (web, email, social, etc).

  • Developing enterprise-wide message guidance, templates, and other resources in partnership with the national External Affairs team.

  • Collaborating with members of the external affairs team to design external affairs tools and resources for regional use.

  • Talking with staff and members of the local network, and reading local media to source stories to be amplified via owned and earned local and national media.

  • Writing, designing, editing and creating - you’ll find a balance of time spent in deep collaboration with local and national colleagues and time spent working independently to execute your plans.

YOUR EXPERIENCE

Your areas of knowledge and expertise that matter most for this role (minimum qualifications):

  • Experience with email marketing platforms, preferably Salesforce Marketing Cloud;

  • Experience creating social media assets and written content;

  • Experience working with design tools such as Canva;

  • Ability to write long-form and short-form content preferred;

  • Exceptional ability to build and execute a project plan;

  • Ability to make timely decisions and demonstrate good judgment.

BONUS (preferred qualifications)

  • Knowledge of Teach For America’s brand standards;

  • Prior experience working with members of the media is a bonus;

  • Ability to work across teams and clearly and efficiently drive work forward;

  • Willing to work occasional weekend or evening work hours.

YOUR FUTURE TEAM

You will be one of four Managers for Regional External Affairs, sitting on Teach For America’s national External Affairs team and reporting directly to a Senior Managing Director for Communications and Public Affairs. You will work very closely with colleagues in the regions you support and you will work as part of a team of teams, comprised of local and national external affairs colleagues, positioned to efficiently make decisions and effectively move work forward. Teach For America’s External Affairs team works to:

  • Grow our network via strategic, omnichannel marketing campaigns that raise awareness with our target audiences;

  • Rally and activate local coalitions through our rebrand reintroducing TFA to all audiences;

  • Elevate TFA and our leaders to be sought-after voices in the media and respected thought leaders in the education sector whose contributions to national and local conversations on education equity drive awareness of TFA’s impact and breakthroughs that accelerate the pace of systems change;

  • Maximize public funding flowing to TFA and to education, specifically the schools & communities we serve - through federal, state and local dollars; and

  • Support regions as they seek to pursue their localized 2030 goals through policy advocacy and government affairs.

YOUR COMPENSATION

The applicable salary range for each U.S.-based role is based on where the employee works and is aligned to one of 3 tiers according to a cost of labor index in that geographic area. Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of job-related factors, which may include education, training, experience, location, business needs, or market demands. New hires are typically brought into the organization at a salary between the range minimum and the salary range midpoint depending on qualifications, internal equity, and the budgeted amount for the role. The expected salary ranges for this role are set forth below. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Tier A: $55,700 - $83,500

Tier B: $60,700 - $91,000

Tier C: $65,700 -$ 98,600
