WHAT YOU’LL DO
The Managing Director of Individual Giving serves as the strategic leader of our largest development stream for the Northern California regions - the Bay Area and California Capital Valley - shaping the vision and bets that will ensure we reach our overall annual fundraising goal of approximately $10M. Reporting to the Vice President, External Affairs, you will be charged with crafting vision, strategy, and execution towards (a) raising approximately $5M from individual funders over the course of our fiscal year, (b) strengthening relationships with our individual funders, and deepening their understanding of and investment in our local vision and student impact goals, (c) diversifying our revenue pipeline by growing our network of supporters, and (d) strengthening our sustainability by securing key upgrades and multi-year commitments. You will employ operational excellence to execute all necessary tactics to steward the individual giving portfolio, and ensure key cultivation campaigns are operated with high standards (including large and small scale events, outreach campaigns, grant agreements, and other core supporter engagements). You’ll effectively manage team members laterally, and show flexibility when needed to support the Individual Giving and full External Affairs team in meeting your collective revenue goal. You will work with program and other cross-functional teams in the Bay Area and national Teach For America teams to source, cultivate, and steward new donors in support of our communities’ impact.
WHAT YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:
Set Individual Giving revenue stream strategy (20%)
Craft an annual and long-term vision for the overall Individual Giving stream, including driving all strategies and campaigns for retaining and upgrading current donors, and securing new donor investments as well as multi-year commitments
Conduct regular analysis of quantitative and qualitative data to inform ongoing stream-wide priorities and adjust course where needed to ultimately meet ambitious annual goals
Manage the execution of your vision-aligned strategies by tracking progress of yourself and other stakeholders, problem-solving and pivoting as needed to ensure goals are met
Donor cultivation and stewardship (50%)
Source, cultivate, and steward our largest portfolio of donors – ranging from high-capacity individual donors ($100K+) to smaller gifts from a large pool of community champions - by developing and executing tailored cultivation and engagement plans
Strategically leverage the Executive Director, board members, and other senior leaders to steward and engage donors, including preparing these individuals for successful donor interactions
Directly engage with new and existing supporters in alignment with your strategic vision, leveraging compelling relationship-building and communication skills
Develop and maintain fluency in TFA-Bay Area’s programs and operations to produce tailored narratives and Case For Support resources, including proposals, reports, and other donor correspondence as needed
Partner with your manager and the broader External Affairs team to lead the planning, project management, and execution of prospecting and stewardship events for individual supporters (approximately 5/year)
Support planning and execution of Annual Dinner, our annual donor fundraiser, expected to raise $1 - 1.5M
Collaborate with TFA’s national development team to cultivate and steward current and prospective funders with ties to Northern CA
Maintain the accuracy and fidelity of donor and giving information to ensure strong knowledge management and operational integrity
New donor strategy (20%)
Assess Northern CA philanthropic landscape through research and prospecting databases, networking maps, and other resources, identifying and qualifying new and lapsed funders for outreach and cultivation efforts
Continuously strengthen prospecting actions to diversify the IG revenue stream, identifying new donors and crafting strategies to enlist them as champions of our work
Drive execution of strategies to attract and secure new donors, working with the broader External Affairs team to align with board member engagement, event strategy, and other cultivation campaigns as needed
Contribute to TFA’s Broader Organizational Vision and Mission (10%)
Participate in the selection of incoming corps members
Engage in regional learning by attending regional all staff meetings and professional development programming
Support TFA Bay Area regional events
A WEEK IN THE LIFE
Over the course of any week, the Managing Director of Individual Giving will spend time collaborating with the VP, External Affairs analyzing data to understand progress to goal for IG revenue and adjust short and long-term actions accordingly. You are preparing for external engagements, both for yourself and for the Executive Director and other senior leaders, by completing thorough and thoughtful research and prep materials. You maintain operational systems to monitor the progress of critical actions, and hold yourself and others accountable to strong execution. You are ensuring critical campaign activities, such as upcoming events or outreach campaigns, are on track by using core project management tools. You set aside time for new donor prospecting, leveraging database tools, networking, and research to move potential supporters along in the supporter journey. You craft compelling communications with supporters in line with your strategic priorities and reflective of the organization’s mission, including reports, stewardship updates, and solicitations. You cultivate an adept understanding of the organization’s programmatic work by engaging directly with cross-functional team members, corps members, and alumni, and apply this knowledge to your portfolio strategy. You have a deep understanding of the broader vision, priorities, and goals of the External Affairs team, and lean in to lend your talents to team-wide goals as needed, including leading or participating in board meetings, supporter events, and campaign activities.
YOUR EXPERIENCE
Your areas of knowledge and expertise that matter most for this role (minimum qualifications):
Minimum of 5 years of professional experience
At least 3 years of experience in development/fundraising
Experience leading high-stakes external relationships independently
Experience with data analysis and data/knowledge management tools
BONUS (preferred qualifications)
Experience with major donors and board management
Knowledge of Bay Area communities
Prior experience working in public schools and/or K-12 education organizations
People management experience a plus
WORK DEMANDS
Some weekend and evening work required
Ability to travel around the Bay Area
SKILLS
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Excel, Powerpoint)
Knowledge of Salesforce and InDesign preferred but not required
EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree
Advanced degree preferred
YOUR COMPENSATION
The applicable salary range for each U.S.-based role is based on where the employee works and is aligned to one of 3 tiers according to a cost of labor index in that geographic area. Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of job-related factors, which may include education, training, experience, location, business needs, or market demands. The expected salary ranges for this role are set forth below. These ranges may be modified in the future.
Tier C: $106,200 to 159, 200
