About MCE Social Capital

MCE is a well-known and respected impact-first investor with a strong track record built over the past 20 years through its pioneering and https://www.mcesocap.org/about-usleveraging blended finance. Philanthropic guarantees enable MCE to leverage the excellent credit of high-net-worth individuals and foundations (Guarantors) to borrow capital from U.S. and European financial institutions and accredited investors to support sustainable livelihoods in emerging economies.

MCE strategically invests this capital in enterprises committed to generating sustainable livelihoods – with a focus on women and the environment – to allow these enterprises to scale and better serve their customers, their employees, and their communities. Since 2006, MCE has disbursed over $400 million in debt capital to 181 institutions in 53 countries throughout emerging economies.

In 2023, MCE launched the MESA Fund, a $42 million impact-first sustainable agriculture fund, bringing total assets under management to $100M. The fund was oversubscribed, a testament to MCE’s track record, team, and investment strategy. • Inclusive Finance, investing in microfinance institutions and other financial service providers that help low-income households gain access to credit, savings accounts, insurance, and business education. MCE provides loans of up to $5 million.

MCE Landscape Today

MCE is stepping into a defining era of growth and possibility. Over the past five years, the organization has nearly doubled its assets, growing from $55 million to $100 million, supported by a strong balance sheet and a deeply engaged, values-aligned investor community. With a 20-year track record of impact and resilience, MCE has evolved beyond its early stage of development and is now pursuing intentional expansion and bold approaches to impact. Guided by a newly finalized five-year strategy and an ambitious 2030 vision, the organization is focused on scaling capital under management while deepening its impact in meaningful and measurable ways.

At the heart of MCE’s strength is its distinctive hybrid model that seamlessly blends philanthropy and investment to advance impact-first lending. This approach is powered by a sophisticated and flexible capital stack, including guarantees, investment notes, institutional funding, and philanthropic capital. While MCE’s performance and model are exceptional, its story is still emerging on the broader stage, creating a powerful opportunity to elevate its visibility and amplify its influence. Internally, MCE is grounded in a highly collaborative, mission-driven culture, with strong leadership, deep engagement, and a reputation for achieving results while fostering a supportive and purpose-driven environment.

Leadership Impact and Opportunity

MCE Social Capital seeks a Chief Business Development Officer (CBDO) to lead the strategy, stewardship, and growth of a portfolio of leading philanthropists and impact investors in the US and Europe in support of the continued growth of its investment portfolio and impact. This leader will build trusted relationships and secure new investment capital and philanthropic guarantee commitments. As the primary driver of capital growth and external engagement, the CBDO will lead Guarantor recruitment, capital raising for MCE’s Global Economic Opportunity Notes program (“Notes”), and formation of strategic partnerships across high-net-worth individuals, family offices, and institutional investors.

Reporting to the CEO and serving as a key member of the five-person senior leadership team, the CBDO will shape MCE’s market presence while strengthening relationships and elevating the organization’s visibility and influence. They will lead a lean, high-performing function, overseeing a senior business development and communications professional and a business development analyst, with dedicated partnership from MCE’s Operations team in managing Guarantor and investor operations.

Success in this role will be driven by the ability to balance multiple fundraising priorities, leverage and expand MCE’s network, and execute thoughtful outreach that builds long-term partnerships. The CBDO will play a central role in raising significant capital, directly advancing portfolio growth in service of MCE’s impact goals. The hybrid capital model allows flexibility in matching prospects to the right MCE instrument and enables close partnership with the CEO and CFO to align fundraising with financial strategy and organizational priorities.

This is a pivotal leadership opportunity at a moment of strong momentum, offering the chance to build on a well-established foundation while shaping MCE’s next phase of growth. The role provides significant influence on future strategy and innovation, including new fund development and expanded market reach. It also offers the opportunity to join a dynamic, global, and mission-driven team within a collaborative leadership culture grounded in trust, autonomy, and shared accountability.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will ideally have 7-10+ years of experience raising capital and/or investor relations, with an understanding of the impact investing landscape and/or development finance. This leader will bring exceptional business development acumen and will serve as a trusted strategic partner to the CEO, senior leadership team, and Board in driving MCE forward in achieving its mission and long-term impact. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a deep commitment to MCE’s mission, paired with the executive presence and credibility to represent the organization at the highest levels. They will bring a proven track record and genuine enthusiasm for cultivating and stewarding relationships, coupled with a strategic and proactive approach to business development that drives sustainable results.

This individual will demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills, superb interpersonal and listening abilities, and a sensitivity to diverse viewpoints and communication styles. They will bring a high degree of organizational effectiveness and operational rigor, enabling them to effectively navigate competing priorities within a complex, multi-stakeholder environment with clarity and focus. Comfort leveraging systems and tools to support execution and performance will be important. Flexibility, an instinct for collaboration, humor, and a willingness to travel approximately 20% are also important to success in the role.

The ideal candidate will bring the following professional and personal qualities:

Relationship Management & Trust-Building

Relationship management is central to this role, requiring a blend of both “soft and hard skills” to build warmth and trust with Guarantors, investors, and donors. This includes stewarding a network of high-net-worth individuals and institutional partners across the sales cycle and engaging stakeholders with varying levels of financial sophistication. The role calls for the ability to educate, persuade, and steward relationships over time, while leveraging existing networks and cultivating new audiences through thoughtful, personalized engagement.

Capital Raising & Individual Investor Engagement

The role demands a proven ability to raise capital from a diverse investor population, including high-net-worth individuals, family offices, private foundations, and donor-advised funds. Success includes managing Guarantor recruitment and retention, raising investment notes, building relationships with wealth management firms, and executing broader fundraising strategies, while sustaining annual gift targets. Candidates must be comfortable with the nuanced mix of philanthropic and investment capital and bring persistence and resilience to long-term relationship building and conversion.

Strategic Communication & Ability to Convey MCE’s Model

Candidates must be able to tell MCE’s story with clarity and conviction, translating a unique and innovative capital raising model with guarantor-backed facilities, a sophisticated financial services approach and robust impact model into language that resonates with a wide range of audiences. This includes shaping how MCE presents itself publicly through speaking engagements, impact reports, webinars, and thought leadership to elevate the organization’s profile. Strong written and oral communication and public speaking skills are essential, as is the ability to quickly absorb the business model and explain it to both sophisticated investors and those new to impact investing and/or MCE’s guarantee structure.

Organizational Discipline & Operational Execution

The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and brings strong senior leadership skills, with the ability to effectively prioritize, delegate, and oversee work across functions. This includes managing multiple moving pieces simultaneously, such as lead generation, reporting, and cross-team coordination, while leveraging tools like Salesforce and other systems to track relationships and data. This leader will be expected to “roll up their sleeves,” balancing strategic priorities with hands-on execution and navigating competing demands in a multi-stakeholder environment.

Collaborative, Low-Ego Leadership & Cultural Alignment
MCE’s culture emphasizes collaboration, trust, and “healthy debate without ego,” with leaders expected to work closely across functions, particularly with the CEO, CFO, and General Counsel/COO. The ideal candidate brings flexibility, humor, and a collaborative spirit, alongside a mission-driven mindset, empathy, and integrity. They will thrive in an environment that balances autonomy with high accountability, contributing to a high-performing, supportive leadership team while independently driving results.
