ICTJ Ethiopia program - Communications Consultant

The International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) is seeking a consultant to provide technical support in communications for the European Union-funded project titled “Phase II Strengthening civil societies’ capacities to contribute to the transitional justice process in Ethiopia.”
ICTJ is carrying out this project through a local implementing partner, the Advocacy Center for Democracy and Development (ACDD). This phase builds upon prior achievements and seeks to deepen efforts aimed at promoting accountability, gender justice, victims’ dignity, and institutional responsiveness by enhancing the role of civil society organizations (CSOs) and victims in transitional justice processes in the Amhara, Oromia, Somali, and Tigray regions.
As part of this initiative, ICTJ and ACDD have undertaken several interventions, including capacity-building training on trauma-informed care and approaches, consultative meetings on transitional justice, comparative experience-sharing workshops, and a small-scale advocacy planning workshop in these four Regions, where CSOs and victim groups collaboratively designed a localized advocacy project addressing transitional justice concerns specific to their communities.
To strengthen communication efforts and enhance the visibility of the project, ICTJ and ACDD seek to appoint a communications Consultant. The Consultant will be responsible in steering communication outputs, ensuring effective dissemination of program results, and enhancing the visibility of the project and its sub-grant initiatives.
Scope of Work
This contract will be for a period of five (5) months, with a minimum of three (3) workdays each week, from February – June 2026.
This job is based in Addis Ababa, with the probability of travel to project sites (Amhara, Oromia, Tigray, Somali Region)
Under the supervision of ICTJ’s Head of Office, Ethiopia and in close coordination with a highly collaborative communications team, the Communications Consultant will:
· Prepare communication and documentation strategy/ Concept and media related activities and corresponding timeline for approval; Based on the project’s objective and implementation level,
· Provide simplified and tailored guidelines further accompanying them through mentorship and coaching through the implementation of the project.
· Develop success stories and lessons learnt stores pitch and draft success stories, human-interest narratives, testimonies, and project milestones.
· Produce content – infographics and visually accessible summaries of activity outputs and impacts for social media.
· Prepare content for dissemination on social media channels.
· Coordinate with ICTJ’s global communications team, as needed, to ensure consistency with organizational messaging.
· Ensure all communication outputs comply with EU policy as well as ICTJ and ACDD branding and visibility guidelines; and
Perform any other communication-related tasks required to support the effective implementation and visibility of the project.
Job Requirements
Education: Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or a related field or the equivalent. Relevant master’s degree preferred.
Experience: Minimum of ten years’ relevant professional work experience in communications.
Required Skills
§ A highly motivated and innovative team player with a demonstrated ability to craft and implement effective communication strategies.
§ Proficient in spoken and written English.
§ Excellent oral and written communication skills
§ Willingness to learn and adapt tasks and responsibilities to a changing environment
§ Significant experience as a member of a highly collaborative team, including experience coordinating with staff members in multiple offices in different time zones and collaboratively planning and implementing projects.
§ Strong analytical and organizational skills, including time management and prioritization skills.
§ The ability to work quickly, creatively, and effectively under pressure and as part of a multicultural team.
§ Experience ideally in a global nonprofit setting. Demonstrated experience with developing and implementing communications strategies.
Desired Skills
§ Knowledge of international human rights or transitional justice issues preferred.
§ Experience in the fields of human rights, transitional justice, or peace building
§ Fluency in one or more of the local languages – Amharic, Afan Oromo, Af Somali or Tigrigna
