The Strategic Growth (SG) team is charged with raising mission-aligned funding to support B Lab Global and B Lab U.S. & Canada. In a time of rapid growth for the B Corp movement, the Strategic Growth team is implementing a multi-year, multimillion dollar fundraising strategy designed to accelerate our fundraising efforts and grow our philanthropic pipeline. At B Lab Global, we use philanthropy to build products, tools, and standards ahead of the market and to support our movement building work (public policy, capacity building, narrative shift, evaluation and research). At B Lab U.S. & Canada, philanthropy is used to support and mobilize the B Corp community and advance three pillars of change: climate justice, racial equity, and stakeholder governance. Philanthropy enables B Lab to keep social impact at the center of our work to make business a force for good.
The SG team currently raises about $5 million annually. Earned revenue, through our certification and verification (C&V) of B Corps, makes up the majority of our income. As the movement grows, we anticipate that philanthropy will be used primarily to support our movement building work and earned income will cover the ongoing costs of verification and impact management. To date, B Lab’s primary sources of philanthropic funding have come from private foundations and individuals closely aligned with B Lab’s mission. We expect this trend to continue, and will prioritize securing unrestricted and loosely restricted funding wherever possible.
