About the position
This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious individual to increase the effectiveness and impact of a non-profit working to improve the lives of millions of the most vulnerable people around the world.

Reporting to the Managing Director of Finance and Administration and working closely with the Director of Programs, the successful applicant will:

•    Coordinate the development of the organisation’s safeguarding framework and associated policies

•    Raise awareness about the organisation’s safeguarding measures and provide training and advice to staff and partners on these measures.

•    Support all levels of organisational management in assessing risks associated with delivering Freedom Fund’s work in all contexts, supporting the effective management and mitigation of these.

•    Lead and support activities that promote good practice relating to safeguarding, ensuring it is a regular, significant and substantive consideration in all aspects of Freedom Fund’s work across all areas of the organisation.

•    Develop tools that enable partner organisations to better embed safeguarding practices throughout their work, tailoring training, and timescales as appropriate according to the stage of organisational development for partners.

•    Receive reports and allegations that relate to safeguarding and ensure that the necessary measures are taken to appropriately respond.

•    Coordinate regular reports to senior management, the Board, and external parties on safeguarding matters.

•    Coordinate safeguarding focal points for each hotspot and safeguarding champions embedded across all departments to strengthen the safeguarding culture of the organisation as well as to identify, analyse and resolve issues and fill gaps.

Responsibilities
 Culture and Policy
•    Work with the SMT to develop an organisational culture which is supportive of good safeguarding practice.

•    Support the continual improvement of Freedom Fund’s safeguarding polices and practice, identifying and sharing areas of best practice.

•    Keep informed of current legislation, statutory and other guidance with regards to safeguarding, cascading the information accordingly.

•    Work with the HR to ensure that all aspects of HR policy and procedure are supportive of good safeguarding practice including ensuring that safeguards are integrated throughout the employment cycle.

•    Design and deliver training to a range of staff and partners worldwide to embed culture and raise awareness of key elements of safeguarding policy including complaints mechanisms, reporting requirements and case management.

Safeguarding Programs
•    Identify and utilise opportunities to integrate safeguarding approaches into all aspects of our work.

•    Support the programs team and our partners to implement policies and develop safe programs and projects where the rights of program participants, vulnerable people, staff and partners are sufficiently prioritised.

•    Differentiate and tailor support for partners depending on their stage of organisational development and the type of grant being awarded.

•    Deliver high quality, accessible and reliable support and guidance to the programs team.

•    Work with the programs team to support and train a network of safeguarding focal points based in hotspots

•    Support the programs team to establish and manage culturally and contextually appropriate reporting lines to ensure full accountability through rigorous reporting and complaints mechanisms.

•    Provide advice to partners (where necessary) on establishing community-level complaints mechanisms that facilitate reporting of concerns by individuals and communities.

•    Provide input and guidance in relation to program design when particularly risky activities (such as residential care) are involved.

•    Act as lead advisor when it comes to the safeguarding aspect of our due diligence assessment of future grantees.

Case Management
•    Receive reports and allegations that relate to safeguarding and ensure that the necessary measures are taken to appropriately respond.

•    Lead of safeguarding investigations – convening investigation teams, ensuring proper documentation of process and advising on external reporting requirements.

•    Discuss subsequent action required to ensure the safety and welfare of individuals who have been abused or whistle blown on abuse.

•    Conduct regular evaluation meetings to discuss and analyse open cases.

•    Support, mentor and coach programs team members  to develop case management capabilities and confidence across the organisation.

•    Provide analysis of any incidents reported and identify any emerging trends to allow mitigations to be developed.

Compliance & Reporting
•    Prepare management and statistical information on safeguarding incidents across the organisations for senior managers and the Board.

•    Coordinate regular reports to senior management on the implementation of safeguarding measures.

•    Lead and coordinate the process of internal reporting to the senior management team and external reporting (including but not limited to the Charity Commission, individual and institutional donors).

•    Develop and conduct regular reviews of the Freedom Fund’s reporting obligations to the Charity Commission, individual and institutional donors to ensure full accountability.

•    Keep abreast of industry best practice to ensure that Freedom Fund’s policies and approaches are appropriate and sufficient.

Other
•    Work with the Communications and Fundraising teams to ensure that appropriate safeguards are made in all promotional materials.

•    Work with the IT Officer and colleagues from other departments to ensure that data (particularly data relating to program participants) is handled safely and in line with all relevant legislation.

•    Any other project or tasks commensurate with this role as delegated from time to time by the Managing Director of Finance and Administration.

Qualifications and experience
 
•    At least five years of professional work experience providing guidance and support on safeguarding matters across an organisation.

•    Experience of designing and delivering safeguarding training to a board range of stakeholders

•    Experience of managing complex protection/safeguarding/PSEA investigations

•    Up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding legislation, regulations and best practice

•    Experience of collating insightful reports on safeguarding practice, incidents and trends.

•    Reporting on safeguarding matters to senior stakeholders

•    Entitled to work in the UK without work permit sponsorship from the Freedom Fund.
