Position Overview |
The Critical Care Nurse Supervisor is responsible for supervising nursing staff in the critical care unit, coordinating patient care, maintaining clinical standards, and ensuring efficient unit operations. The role combines leadership, clinical expertise, and day-to-day administrative responsibilities to deliver safe, effective, and patient-centered care. |
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: |
| Clinical Leadership and Unit Operations - Supervise and coordinate critical care nursing staff to ensure safe, timely, and patient-centered care.
- Assign patient care duties according to patient acuity, clinical needs, and staff competence.
- Monitor patients' conditions and support staff in the management of complex, deteriorating, or emergency cases.
- Maintain high standards of nursing care and compliance with hospital policies, infection prevention protocols, and applicable regulatory standards.
- Develop duty rosters and manage staffing levels to maintain adequate coverage and appropriate skill mix.
- Lead daily safety huddles, nursing handovers, bed allocation discussions, and escalation of staffing or patient-flow risks.
- Conduct regular staff supervision, performance review, attendance follow-up, and supportive action planning in line with hospital procedures.
- Participate in recruitment, orientation, and retention of critical care nursing staff.
- Manage clinical incidents, patient complaints, and emergencies promptly and appropriately, escalating concerns through established organogram.
- Ensure the availability, safe use, and appropriate maintenance of medical equipment, supplies, and consumables.
- Monitor stock levels and coordinate timely replenishment or escalation of equipment and supply gaps that may affect safe CCU operations.
- Maintain accurate clinical and administrative documentation and prepare reports as required.
Clinical Education, Mentorship, and Competency - Collaborate with the CCU Consultant and Clinical Nurse Educator to assess learning needs and develop education plans that address knowledge and skills gaps.
- Develop and deliver orientation, competency, and continuing professional development programs for critical care nurses.
- Provide clinical teaching, coaching, and mentorship to critical care nursing staff and students.
- Organize simulation-based learning and emergency response training in collaboration with the CCU Consultant and Clinical Nurse Educator.
- Evaluate staff competence through direct observation, skills assessments, and performance evaluation, and support timely improvement plans where needed.
Quality Improvement, Patient Safety, and Collaboration - Monitor the quality of nursing care and lead continuous quality improvement and patient safety initiatives within the CCU.
- Monitor key quality indicators, including infection rates, medication safety, documentation quality, and patient outcomes.
- Analyze clinical data, identify gaps, and implement corrective actions with relevant teams.
- Lead review of adverse events, near misses, and critical incidents; ensure appropriate documentation, debriefing, learning, and follow-up actions.
- Collaborate with the CCU Consultant, physicians, Director of Nursing, Nurse Manager, and multidisciplinary teams to improve patient outcomes.
- Support implementation of new equipment, standard operating procedures, and clinical protocols.
- Maintain advanced critical care clinical competence, including dialysis, airway management, intubation support, and mechanical ventilation within scope of practice and applicable protocols.

Education and Work Experience Requirements: |
| Required Qualifications - Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with a postgraduate diploma in Critical Care Nursing, or a master's degree in Critical Care Nursing.
- Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Advanced clinical knowledge and practical competence in critical care nursing.
- Knowledge of quality improvement, infection prevention, patient safety, and clinical governance.
Experience - At least five years of critical care nursing experience in a busy intensive care unit, including demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience.
- Experience developing and delivering clinical education, simulation-based learning, or competency assessment programs is desirable.
- Experience leading quality improvement initiatives in a critical care or acute hospital setting is desirable.
Skills and Competencies - Strong leadership, people management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated critical thinking, sound clinical judgment, and ability to make rapid, appropriate decisions during emergencies.
- Strong conflict resolution, problem-solving, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Ability to work effectively with nursing, medical, allied health, and operational teams.
- Computer literacy, including ability to use common documentation and reporting tools.
