Position Overview

The Medical Officer of Obstetrics & Gynecology will be involved in the care of the patients within the Triage, In-patient wards, Theatre Suite, L&D unit, and the OPD Clinics belonging to the Maternal Centre of Excellence. They will undertake rostered clinical and on-call duties, with direct supervision provided by the Consultant and/or Registrar, in close collaboration with the broader MCOE clinical, nursing, and midwifery teams. They will take patient medical histories, conduct physical examinations, interpret the results of diagnostic tests and use this as a guideline alongside Sierra Leone national RMNCAH, MCOE policies and procedures to plan the patient’s care. They will also work as part of the multi-disciplinary team and coordinate patient care with other specialists within Koidu Government Hospital (KGH). Participation in research activities and health data collection will be mandatory. Applicants should be Sierra Leonean nationals and must have attained a MBBS or its equivalent from an Internationally recognized University.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

General duties:

• Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary maternity team to provide high-quality, evidence-based clinical care in line with national and international guidelines
• Complete daily rounds and maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, including patient histories, treatment plans, and progress notes using the MCOE/KGH EMR system
• To participate in all processes around clinical governance, clinical audit, departmental meetings, and risk management/patient safety processes, MPDSR weekly/monthly meetings
• Initiating and overseeing Quality Improvement Projects in the MCOE to improve practice
• Observing all aspects of the MCOE Respectful Maternal Care Policy by communicating effectively and respectfully with mothers, families, and caregivers – providing clear updates on the condition, explaining treatment options in a compassionate and understandable manner, and offering emotional support that upholds dignity, privacy, and shared decision-making
• In cases where the need arises, the Medical Officer may be required to provide support to other MCOE services. This support may extend to Primary Health Units, community outreaches including Clinics, representation at regional and national activities, review patients across the KGH campus such as those in isolation unit and the Emergency Department. This collaborative approach reflects our commitment to holistic health care and the well-being of the community we serve.

Teaching & Supervision

• Provide regular training, mentorship, and supervision to junior students / staff, clinical officers, and midwifery/nursing teams. Active participation in both formal and informal teaching activities for the wider multidisciplinary team is an integral part of this role

Education and Work Experience Requirements:

• Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) from an internationally recognized and accredited medical school.
• Valid medical license and registration with the Sierra Leone Medical and Dental Council.
• Desirable a minimum of two years of clinical experience, preferably in a district or regional hospital within Sierra Leone
• Proficiency in written and spoken English; knowledge of local languages is an asset.
• Proficiency in basic computing skills, including Microsoft Office, Goggle Drive and relevant Social Media
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong commitment to providing compassionate care to neonates and their families.
• Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and adapt to a resource-limited healthcare environment.
• Commitment to live in Koidu and work full-time exclusively at KGH, following the schedule of shifts and on calls established by the roster in the correspondent department
