Position Overview

This position is for a board-certified pediatrician who would work as a member of the Pediatrics team and within the Maternal Center of Excellence (MCOE) at Koidu Government Hospital (KGH). This position at PIH is an international position for an experienced pediatrician who would provide bedside clinical care and services to the children across all ages including newborns. He or she will work closely with the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health and Sanitation on the development and implementation of clinical guidelines, care delivery systems improvement related to child health and neonatal services, medical education initiatives, as well as publishable quality improvement and research studies. This individual will equally work with the PIH-SL clinical leadership team and provide support to the clinical leadership and the broader PIH leadership to advance PIH’s core mission of health systems strengthening in Sierra Leone

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Clinical care and teaching (80%)

• Daily round

Provide high-quality clinical care services in the pediatrics and neonatal wards

Work collaboratively with the obstetric/ maternity team and Primary Health Care Units (PHUs), to improve Perinatal care.

• Bedside teaching, mentoring and supervision of junior medical and nursing teams working with him/her and will devote time to this activity regularly.

• Work with department of clinical education on the development and delivery of a longitudinal didactic curriculum for physicians, nurses and clinical officers, as may be required.

• Conduct regular and rigorous case reviews to share experience and good practices

• The post holder would undertake educational outreach visits and provide support/advice to other facilities providing any level of child health services within Kono region (PHUs) or in Partners in Health supported facilities in Sierra Leone as may be required.

• Quality Improvement and Research: Develop and support quality improvement and research initiatives in child health and neonatology, organize mortality/morbidity reviews, review for service utilization data etc.

Optimize patient care through the effective interpretation and use of electronic medical records and other data sources.

  1. Leadership and administration (20%)

• Lead by example, embodying the values of PIH, including: doing whatever it takes to provide the highest level of service to our patients; treating every member of our organization and community with equal respect and dignity; fostering a sense of generosity and teamwork; and working patiently, yet persistently, to accompany our government partners to achieve our shared goals.

• Work with other members of the clinical leadership team in the development and implementation of clinical governance including clinical audit and risk management/patient safety processes, maternal death and surveillance review / pediatric-neonatal death and surveillance review’s weekly/monthly meetings.

• Attend leadership meetings within MCOE and KGH with both PIH-SL and MOHS as may be required

• Attend weekly Clinical Ops Meetings at KGH

• Participate in the effective and appropriate management of resources within the department.

• Support systems improvement effort for the pediatrics department

  1. Other duties as delegated to you by your line manager that fall within the scope of work and role level.

Education and Work Experience Requirements:

• Medical degree (MD or equivalent) with advanced training in Pediatrics.

• Board certification is required.

• Valid medical license and registration with the Sierra Leone or country of origin Medical and Dental Council.

• Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience in pediatrics with at least two years of clinical experience in a low-resource health care setting is required

•Experience in neonatal health care is a strong advantage

•Experience in treating malnutrition, malaria, HIV/ AIDS and other tropical diseases is required.

• Ability to provide culturally sensitive and competent quality care in an extremely stressful environment is required.

• Proficiency in English is required

• Proven commitment to social justice and passion for serving the poor and vulnerable

• Ability to live in Kono - Sierra Leone full-time
