Then, we build coalitions of communities, health workers, government, and universities to generate evidence of impact and infuse these insights into the formal health system in Kenya and beyond. This bottom-up change promises holistic solutions that are custom-built for the systems they are meant to reform.

The Role

Lwala is growing our External Affairs Department, including our communications and business development capacities, to meet organizational needs and fundraising goals. In order to implement our ambitious 2028 Strategy, we expect to raise $90m over this 5-year period. The External Affairs Analyst, Advocacy & Partnerships will sit on Lwala’s External Affairs Department, which oversees business development, advocacy, reporting, and organizational positioning. The External Affairs Analyst, Programs & Partnerships will work within the Communications and Partnerships team to manage a portfolio of funders, including relationship management, reporting, and proposal development.

This role will report to Lwala’s Director of External Affairs, Communications and Partnerships, based in Washington DC. As the External Affairs Department is built out, this role may shift reporting to another member of the Communications and Partnerships team.

Working location and hours

This position is based in Kenya, working remote with occasional travel. This is a global role with responsibilities that span work in the US and Kenya. Thus, the External Affairs Officer, Programs & Partnerships will be expected to regularly work the hours of 4PM – 7PM EAT, in order to have sufficient overlap with Western time zones. Working day start time is flexible and can be adjusted based on need.

Key Responsibilities

Grants Management and Reporting

  • Own a portfolio of grants and lead reporting to those funders
  • Lead stewardship and engagement strategy for institutional donors
  • Support Research and Learning team to maintain donor metrics and KPIs, and manage workflow of reporting data
  • Manage the comprehensive database of current grant funders and track reporting requirements and deadlines
  • Develop content for donor reports, and support production of quarterly Insider Reports and Annual Reports

Proposal and Programs Development

  • Lead in outlining and drafting letters of inquiry, concept papers, and proposal submissions for new grants and grant renewals, with special attention to program narratives, work plans, milestones, and budgets
  • Support program team in the development of program strategies, theories of change, work plans, and key performance indicators
  • Support US team in accomplishing tasks that need to be completed during Kenya business hours (i.e. collecting data from program team, responding to urgent donor requests)

Partnerships development

  • Attend donor visits and liase with Co-CEO, development team and programs team to ensure that the goals of the visit are met.
  • Support business development and new partner scoping through attending relevant meetings, conferences, or partner events
  • Seek out networking opportunities and follow up with new leads generated
  • Strengthen collaboration with international & external stakeholders

Grants Finance

  • Work with Grants Manager to ensure high-quality grants finance management and accurate allocation of grant funding
  • Coordinate with finance team to ensure accurate financing reporting for donors

Other Deliverables

  • Support communications on an ad hoc basis, including releasing e-blasts, posting to social media, and making website updates
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Experience Required

  • A degree or relevant experience in international development, public health, public administration, communications, statistics or related field, master degree preferred
  • Experience working in a field-based position in East Africa
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in grants management, program delivery, monitoring & evaluation, communications and/or fundraising
  • Strong writing abilities, both creative and analytical, with strong editing skills required
  • Experience with nonprofit grants, donor reporting and budget adherence
  • A background in grant compliance and reporting to institutional foundations
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Ability to learn quickly and take initiative
  • Process-oriented with capacity to develop and drive work plans and meet deadlines
  • Maturity to tolerate nuance, handle competing priorities, and communicate with executive-level leadership
  • Flexibility to work across time zones
  • Patience, curiosity and resilience
  • Self-motivation and resourcefulness
  • A proven ability to work with teams
  • Successful experience working with people from different cultural backgrounds
