The position is offered in the Biocommunication Group at ETH Zürich, led by Professor Consuelo De Moraes. Our group investigates insect-host interactions using behavioral, chemical, and molecular approaches. We are looking for a motivated student to assist with rearing our mosquito colonies at the ETH main campus to support projects researching mosquito attaction to different human host physiological states.
Job description
In this position, you will work directly with insects in tailored climate chambers, rearing and managing our mosquito colonies at ETHZ. The role is well-suited to a reliable and organized student who would enjoy hands-on work with insects. After completing the required training, you will be able to carry out routine tasks with increasing independence. The job mainly involves:
- Taking care of mosquito eggs, larvae, pupae and adults
- Managing population sizes
- Preparing mosquitoes for experiments
- Cleaning and maintenance of the colonies and equipment
The position is for 20-30 hours per month (approx. 4-7 hours spread across 3-5 days per week), starting at the beginning of September. The position is available for 6-12 months.
All work will take place at the ETHZ campus in the LFO building.
Profile
- Current Bachelor or Master student at ETH or UZH
- Fluent in English
- Comfortable working with mosquitoes (and not allergic to mosquito bites)
- Reliable, careful and well organized. The work will take place in BSL-2 facilities and applicants must be willing to adhere to strict safety protocols
- Experience with insects or biosafety is beneficial
