Researcher Position in the field of Chemical Engineering/Environmental Chemistry for the investigation of emissions of PFASs from fluoropolymer production plants

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The group of Environmental Organic Chemistry at ETH Zürich is seeking a highly motivated and qualified person to fill a position for an investigation of the emissions of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) from fluoropolymer production plants. The successful candidate will join a dynamic research team working on the risk assessment and management of chemicals with a strong focus on PFASs.

Project background

The position is part of our long-term activities in the area of uses, properties, and environmental fate of, and alternatives to, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). Fluoropolymers (FPs) are an important group of PFASs and their production is associated with emissions of a variety of fluorinated organic chemicals. The fluoropolymer industry has proposed emission factors quantifying the emissions of non-polymeric fluorinated substances from the production processes of FPs. In this project, we want to (i) develop an in-depth technical understanding of typical emissions associated with the production of FPs, (ii) understand the technology of emission control systems at FP production plants, and (iii) investigate whether the proposed emission factors are plausible. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with international experts of the Global PFAS Science Panel (GPSP), and also in collaboration with a network of industry, government, and NGO experts.

Job description

  • Collection of technical information about fluoropolymer manufacture (scientific literature, technical reports, product reports by companies, patents, conversations with experts, etc.) from the field of chemical engineering
  • Quantitative analysis of information about chemical losses and emissions from fluoropolymer production plants
  • Scrutinizing the emission factors proposed by the fluoropolymer industry for future fluoropolymer production in the EU
  • Preparing reports and a scientific publication about the project findings
  • Participating in meetings and workshops

Profile

  • Background in chemical engineering, chemistry, polymer sciences or related fields, with an MSc degree
  • Ability to gather, handle, and interpret technical information about the polymerization processes used in the manufacture of fluoropolymers
  • Strong communication and writing skills in English, enabling effective collaboration and the preparation of scientific publications and reports
  • Ability to work independently and to familiarize yourself with new topics in a timely manner
