Postdoctoral researcher or Scientist or Expert position in Energy System Modelling
100%, Zurich, fixed-term
The Research Center for Energy Networks (Forschungsstelle Energienetze - FEN) at ETH Zurich was founded in 2011 to address the need for independent, credible and applied research. FEN acts as a "bridge" between academic research and industrial needs related to energy policy, shaping the transition to a more sustainable, reliable and cost-effective future energy system. FEN provides utilities, grid operators, industrial associations, and federal institutions with a technology-neutral and independent quantitative analysis.
Project background
We are looking for a highly qualified and motivated Postdoctoral Researcher, Scientist, or Expert to strengthen our team in the field of energy system modelling.
The central focus of this position is the application of our in-house energy system modelling frameworks to real-world challenges at different temporal and spatial scales. You will work on practical problems ranging from the design of building-level energy solutions and municipal energy planning to national system studies of Switzerland, and European-wide multi-sector energy integration.
Job description
Main Tasks
- Apply our in-house energy system modelling frameworks to analyze and solve real-world energy system problems of different temporal and spatial scale, including:
- Evaluating European and Swiss energy scenarios across sectors and international exchanges under different levels of market-integration and market-coupling mechanisms;
- Evaluating the economic impact of policy measures related to the Swiss energy system;
- Assessing the national Swiss power and gas transmission network (balancing, congestions, hazards);
- Analyzing hydropower cascades and hydrological networks;
- Planning resilient and sustainable multi-energy supply systems and grids (electricity, heat, gas, hydrogen, mobility) for municipalities;
- Optimizing building-level energy demand and supply
- Extend and customize the frameworks according to the research questions and project needs.
- Conduct scenario analyses to explore pathways for sustainable, secure, and affordable energy supply.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary research teams and external stakeholders to identify, create and interpret quantitative insights to address real-world challenges.
- Disseminate results through scientific publications, technical reports, industry publications and through presentations at national and international conferences.
Profile
- PhD degree in engineering (preferably electrical or mechanical), preferably in the design and optimization of energy systems (or electric power systems) or in energy economics.
- Considerable experience in at least one (preferably two) of the following: energy systems analysis with mathematical optimization (emphasis on adequate modelling, problem formulation), electricity markets, renewable gases (e.g. hydrogen).
- Provable programming skills.
- Experience in modelling and analysis of energy systems.
- Excellent knowledge of English.
- Good command of German is a plus.
- Strong analytical skills, self-driven personality and willingness to learn.
- Excellent presentation skills and excellent skills in technical/scientific writing.
With the social and leadership competencies, ETH Zurich has developed a common understanding for a shared work culture. Kindly try to incorporate these six competencies into your recruitment.
