Title: Senior Accountant

Location: Country Office Abuja

Supervisor: Deputy Director, Finance

Basic Functions:

Under the direction of the Deputy Director, Finance, the Accountant shall assume responsibility for accounting in the Country Office and ensure compliance with the contractual financial requirements of programs/projects.

Key Responsibilities

Treasury & Cash Management

  • Oversee CO treasury operations, including daily cash position, payment tracking, and monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Maintain accurate records of all CO bank accounts and banking mandates.
  • Serve as the primary contact for CO banking relationships and staff profiling.
  • Prepare and submit weekly cash requests to the Hub and ensure country office liquidity for daily operations. Ensure accurate recording of intercompany and other third-party cash transfers

Payments & Compliance

  • Lead payment processing on DPA, GFAS, and GAPS platforms; monitor daily payment status.
  • Coordinate review of submitted payments for the country office and follow through for payment.
  • Maintain updated payments records including all payments documentation.
  • Prepare monthly PAYE, WHT and other statutory remittance schedules and ensure timely statutory remittances.
  • Maintain records of all statutory obligations and compliance requirements.

Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Coordinate monthly submission of country office balance sheet and ensure the accuracy of the balance sheets before submission.
  • Prepare monthly pipeline reports for projects as may be assigned.
  • Assist in preparing monthly and annual financial reports, including subproject financial status and supporting documentation.
  • Monitor project expenditures, analyze financial data, and produce periodic/ad hoc reports.
  • Support business development activities by assisting in budget development for new programs and modifications.

Audit & Documentation

  • Retrieve and collate supporting documents for audits.
  • Ensure accurate maintenance of accounting records, including checking accounts, equipment, and supply registers.

Budgeting & Workflow

  • Assist in monitoring subproject budgets against approved work plans.
  • Prepare fiscal year budgets and enter them into the accounting system.
  • Support state and other project finance staff to ensure accuracy and completeness of payment documentation.
  • Support accounting workflow for CO and subrecipient reports, including reimbursement reviews.

Other Duties

  • Oversee the management of petty cash within the country office and provide technical supports to deep field offices on cash management.
  • Create and maintain financial spreadsheets.
  • Collaborate with team leads to resolve expenditure and budget issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Ability to work with others and to develop and maintain compatibility among project staff, subcontractors, and recipients of assistance.
  • Well-developed computer skills.
  • Well-developed written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting, budgeting and fiscal control theory and practices.
  • Knowledge of general office practices and administrative procedures or the ability to comprehend them.
  • Budget monitoring and general ledger skills.
  • Relevant software skills to include automated accounting software, database spreadsheets and Management Information Systems.
  • Accounting and bookkeeping skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive financial information with integrity and confidentialityr.
  • Handle financial and quantitative information with accuracy and precision; resourceful in gathering, verifying and analyzing financial data.
  • Ability to travel in Nigeria for minimum of 25%

Qualifications and requirements:

  • BS/BA degree in Accounting, Finance and Business Administration or its recognized equivalent, and 5 – 7 years relevant experience.
  • Or MS/MA degree in Accounting, Finance and Business Administration or its recognized equivalent, and 3 – 5 years relevant experience.
  • Minimum of 3-4 years experience in accounting related to international development programs.
  • Familiarity with DOS funded programs and non-governmental organizations in Nigeria is an advantage.
  • CPA, ACA, ACCA or recognized equivalent is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated success in multicultural environments is an advantage.
  • Experience must reflect the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above
