FHI 360 has an exciting internship opportunity for a student interested in growing their skills within the international development sector. The Media Relations Intern will work collaboratively within a dynamic, fast-paced, deadline-oriented, multi-media communications department to support the media relations strategy that advances FHI 360’s business priorities. Key functions include researching relevant reporters and developing interview support documents, creating reports to measure outcomes, and monitoring media outlets. This role will also support the external communications team by helping to develop written materials as well as general research and some administrative tasks.

This is a paid internship with a flexible schedule based on project needs.

Anticipated Duration: Fall 2024 Semester, August – December 2024

Hours: 10-20 hours per week

Pay Rate: $18.00/hour

Location: Remote (US)

Skills Gained and Learning Opportunities:

  • Practical experience with a large, global non-profit organization’s corporate communications department.

  • Shadowing, mentoring and training opportunities with communications professionals.

  • Practical experience with media relations and familiarity with Muck Rack (media relations software).

Anticipated Project(s) and Assignment Details:

The intern may contribute to various team or project activities under the direction of their supervisor in the following ways:

  • Develop media relations reports, including monthly media mention roundups.

  • Conduct media outlet/reporter research and develop media backgrounders.

  • Conduct trend analysis to identify timely media opportunities.

  • Support written materials including announcements, news alerts, feature stories, Degrees blogs, FHI 360 website pages and social media posts.

  • Assist with communications-related administrative tasks, as needed, including updating communications-related presentations and documents.

  • Participate in team meetings and country calls.

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Currently enrolled in a degree program at a college or university in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, English or a related field of study, or within one year of graduation date.

  • Demonstrated experience writing articles and/or longer form copy, whether for a school publication, past internship or academic writing.

  • Interviewing experience preferred.

  • Keen interest in the media and a regular consumer of news.

  • Strong writing and research skills.

  • Demonstrated interest in nonprofit communications and international development through studies, work experience, and/or personal travel.

  • Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and bring forth ideas.

  • Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English.

Typical Physical Demands:

  • Remote office environment

  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; ability to lift to 5 lbs.
