Overview

AARP’s Integrated Communications and Marketing (ICM) Group includes Membership, Content and Editorial, Customer Experience, External Relations, Brand Strategy and Strategic Communications. Across paid, earned, shared and owned channels, ICM manages AARP’s reputation, drives engagement and member growth, and showcases AARP’s mission and value through one, integrated voice.

 

The Deputy Editor, AARP Publications directs the development and implementation of written or scripted content for publications, books, and/or digital platforms. Collaborates with both internal and external teams on content production and publication. Ensures format and quality of materials for dissemination are consistent with established publishing policies. Collaborates with senior management to identify opportunities and to develop strategic content production plans that will position the organization for success.


Responsibilities

  • Directs the creation of authoritative and trustworthy content for digital, print, and other platforms that appeals to the 50+ demographic and amplifies the organization’s social mission.
  • Ensures that content is high-quality, adheres to publishing and digital best practices, enhances the user experience, and is presented in innovative and compelling ways.
  • Collaborates with senior management and internal stakeholders to develop short- and long-term content strategies that help grow impact, relevance, and revenue.
  • Employs digital analytics tools and other resources to develop an in-depth understanding of the 50+ audience. Analyzes content performance and identifies opportunities for sustainable growth of the organization’s existing and emerging content platforms.
  • Builds and maintains constructive and productive partnerships with the organization’s internal and external stakeholders. Keeps abreast of new initiatives, campaigns, programs, and research.
  • Monitors major developments and news of interest to the 50+ audience and acts as a key decision-maker on content priorities.
  • Oversees, guides, and manages a team of staff writers and editors; helps oversee the management of external content contributors.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 10+ years of experience with a major newspaper or magazine, including deep digital experience with online journalism.
  • Preferably 15+ years of management-level skills and experience, as well as journalistic skill set that includes assigning, editing, managing a staff, etc. on multiple platforms.

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
